Indonesia, Rank 65th of Democracy Index?

Filed under: Indonesia — estananto @ 10:12 pm

in Bali province, election is part of tradition! In Economist’s recent report, they ranked Indonesia in 65th place. Is it fair? After 2004 most complex election in the world? After great hope from the Indonesian people with 120 million voters (and that’s already 80% of Indonesians who already have right to vote at that time) which live in islands in the whole archipelago streching as long as from western to eastern part of Europe? This election has been done without violence sparked by loosing parties,Muslims don't hesitate to vote which should be a great success for a nation that just enjoyed the second free election after 6 years “Guided Democracy” regime and 32 years military regime. For a nation with 220 million people with hundreds local languages (not dialects!) – and this people are very multicultural and plural – it is already a great leap.

And now they gave only 6.92 points of “Electoral process and pluralism” and even only 5.00 for “Political participation”. How amazing. One could be disagree if he were asked the same question but in my opinion, it is not fair for Indonesia.
